He probably put the arch in Rushden St Mary&#8217;s to prevent this happening as the relatively slender pillars of the nave take quite a strain from the raised roof.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><strong>A General View<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7704 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/stmaryschurchrushden.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/100_9362-203x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"203\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stmaryschurchrushden.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/100_9362-203x300.jpg 203w, https:\/\/stmaryschurchrushden.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/100_9362-693x1024.jpg 693w, https:\/\/stmaryschurchrushden.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/100_9362-768x1135.jpg 768w, https:\/\/stmaryschurchrushden.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/100_9362-1040x1536.jpg 1040w, https:\/\/stmaryschurchrushden.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/100_9362-1386x2048.jpg 1386w, https:\/\/stmaryschurchrushden.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/100_9362.jpg 1437w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 203px) 100vw, 203px\" \/>Approaching St Mary\u2019s Church from many directions one can see the tower and spire, 172 feet high, erected at the end of the 14th century.\u00a0 Part of the tower dates from a century earlier, but it was enlarged and strengthened to carry the spire while John Gaunt held Higham Castle.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><strong>The Pulpit<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The pulpit is constructed of oak and dates from the time of Wycliffe. Only 35 of these Fourteenth Century pulpits are left in England.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7706\" src=\"https:\/\/stmaryschurchrushden.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/the-pulpit-225x300-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><strong>Chancel East Window<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">This is a large Perpendicular window of 5 lights with two rows of smaller lights above, ten to a row, containing incomplete or unidentifiable figures &#8211; some with crowns, sceptres or orbs (kings?). The uppermost quatrefoil shows the five wounds of Jesus. The main lower lights are of 19th century work and the allegorical figures are fairly obvious.
