Gardening Team

The gardening team are affectionately known by some as “The Last of The Communion Wine”.

A few months in the Garden

Well time certainly flies and once again it has been 10 months since we reported the news from the Church Yard Gardeners. It has been a period of many emotions as we have lost Ken in this time and he is much missed but he would be pleased to see his snowdrops have flowered again. They don’t compete with Chelveston but add a lovely touch to the approach to Church.

Fred also no longer is able to help but he has been known to appear just as the tea was being brewed and we still rely on his expertise. Jose and Don have joined the team though their gardening skills have not been fully put to the test as the winter weather has curtailed any real gardening.

I looked back two years and to my horror discovered that on February 17th 2009 we were pruning the rose trees so we had better get our secateurs at the ready over the next two or three weeks. I don’t think we will be shredding these but all being well we will take all the cuttings to the recycling centre a much easier option. The hyacinths we reset last year appear to have survived so we can expect a magnificent display of hundreds of lovely pink flowers, which my sister always appreciates.

Despite the bad winter weather we have managed to keep reasonably busy and have only missed a few Wednesdays over the last few months as there is always sweeping up to be done and general tidying up. Over Christmas we are fair weather gardeners as we have to go into the Church and put up the lanterns and candles as well as artistically decorating the Christmas tree, which I hoped, you all admired (we went for a silver and gold theme this year with one rogue green bauble). For the first time for many a month we do not have a large heap of cuttings and wood as this has now either been burnt or taken up to the tip, though we still have three compost heaps in various stages of decomposition.

Once again I would invite anyone to come and help us in the spring and summer or just pop in for a chat, as I am always willing to stop work, as Mick would be keen to tell you.
